Afrolatin

Afrolatin

These Afrolatin compilations on Syllart follow on from the lovely African Pearls series, Mali 70, Congo 70 and Senegal 70, and this time put the spotlight on cities and ports. Both these releases are double discs full to the brim with the music which emerged out of the rich encounter between African music and the Cuban sounds brought in by sailors. On Via Kinshasa, Congolese rumba legends Franco, Tabuley Rochereau, Dr Nico and Joseph “Grand Kallé” Kabasele dominate the 39 tracks. Via Dakar offers the top names in Senegal who played Afro-Latin sounds, with Star Number One, Baobab and the Star Band as well as lesser known groups.

With vocals often in phonetic Spanish, the Congolese and Senegalese reworkings of cha cha cha, guaguanco, son, pachanga and bolero put the electric guitar centre stage (replacing Havana’s piano). The music bounces with sweet exuberance, and palpable, contagious optimism. With full liner-notes and archival photographs in the accompanying booklets, these releases have been beautifully put together. Highly recommended.
